Joseph Man Chan is Research Professor, School of Journalism and Communication and Emeritus Professor of Journalism and Communication at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He is currently the Director of the Centre for Chinese Media and Comparative Communication Research and the Universities Service Centre for China Studies. His research interest lies in the intersection of international communication, political communication and journalism studies. His current projects relate to communication and social movements as well as collective memory.  He has published numerous articles in books and international journals such as JOC, CR, JMCQ, MC&S, IJPOR, NM&S, China Quarterly, etc. He was elected as ICA Fellow in 2014. He served as a Changjiang Chair Professor at Fudan University and the founding chief editor of Communication & Society.

jack Jack Linchuan Qiu is Associate Professor at the School of Journalism and Communication, the Chinese University of Hong Kong. His publications include World’s Factory in the Information Era 信息时代的世界工厂 (Guangxi Normal University Press, 2013), Working-Class Network Society (MIT Press, 2009), Mobile Communication and Society (co-authored, MIT Press, 2006). Apart from being the Associate Editor for Journal of Communication, he is on the editorial boards of ten international academic journals, including six indexed in the SSCI. He enjoys working with grassroots labor NGOs and provides consultancy services for international organizations.

anthony Anthony Ying Him Fung is Director and Professor of the School of Journalism and Communication at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He obtained his Ph.D. at the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at University of Minnesota. He is also a Pearl River Chair Professor at Jinan University at Guangzhou, China. His research interests and teaching focus on popular culture and cultural studies, popular music, gender and youth identity, cultural industries and policy, and new media studies. He published widely in international journals, and authored and edited more than ten Chinese and English books.

christine Christine Yi Hui Huang is Professor of the School of Journalism and Communication at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. She received her Ph.D. in mass communication from the University of Maryland, USA. Dr. Huang’s research interests include public relations management, crisis communication, conflict and negotiation, and cross-cultural communications and relationship. Her research awards include the Best Article Award in Public Relations Scholarship awarded by the National Communication Association, USA, the Distinguished Research Award given by the National Science Council, R.O.C, Top paper award given by the International Communication Association, and the Exemplary Teaching Award awarded by Faculty of Social Science, the Chinese University of Hong Kong. She has served in the editorial board for Journal of Communication, Communication Theory, Public Relations Review, Journal of Public Relations Research, Asian Journal of Communication, Communication Studies, Journal of Business Ethics, and International Journal of Strategic Communication.

Prof. Christine Y.H. HUANG
Professor of School of Journalism and Communication

paul Paul Siu Nam Lee is Professor of the School of Journalism and Communication at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He received his Ph.D. in Communication from the University of Michigan. His research interests include International Communication, Telecoms Policy, New Media and Media Analysis. Professor Lee pioneered in the study of China and Hong Kong telecommunications. In 1997, he edited and published the book Telecommunications and development in China. In 2002-04, he collaborated with scholars from China and Taiwan in a study of Internet growth in Beijing, Wuhan, Taipei and Hong Kong and jointly published the first comparative study of Internet communication in Chinese societies in 2009 entitled The rise of Internet in Chinese societies (In Chinese). Professor Lee was the founding editor of the Chinese Journal of Communication. Professor Lee served as Director of the School of Journalism and Communication at the Chinese University in 1998-2005 and Dean of Social Science in 2005-2014. During his tenure, he has helped to organize four interdisciplinary academic programmes, including MSSc in General Education, MSSc in Global Political Economy, MSSc in Public Policy, and a bachelor’s programme in Contemporary China Studies.

francis Francis Lap Fung Lee is Professor and Head of Graduate Division, School of Journalism and Communication, the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He works mainly in the areas of journalism studies, political communication, and media and social movements. His publications include Media, Social Mobilization, and Mass Protests in Post-colonial Hong Kong (with Joseph M. Chan, Routledge, 2011), Communication, Public Opinion and Globalization in Urban China (with Chin-chuan Lee et al., Routledge, 2013) and Talk Radio, the Mainstream Press and Public Opinion in Hong Kong (Hong Kong University Press, 2014). lo Ven-hwei Lo is Professor at the School of Journalism and Communication, the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Before joining the Chinese University of Hong Kong, he taught at the National Chengchi University in Taipei, Taiwan for 24 years. He is currently the editor of Communication and Society, a leading Chinese communication journal. His research interests include news media performance and the effects of mass media. He is the author of seven books and his recent publications appeared in Asian Journal of Communication, Communication Research, Journalism and Mass Communication Quarterly, Journal of Broadcasting & Electronic Media, International Journal of Public Opinion Research, Media Psychology, The Chinese Journal of Communication, The Harvard International Journal of Press/Public, and Mass Communication Research.

eric Eric Kit Wai Ma teaches communication at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. His books include Desiring Hong Kong, Consuming China, and Culture, Politics and Television in Hong Kong. His articles appear in journals such as Visual Anthropology, Cultural Studies, International Journal of Cultural Studies, Social Text, Positions, Inter-Asia Cultural Studies, etc. He has written and edited more than twenty books in Chinese, the most recent ones include Trends Factory: a visual ethnography and Mediated Modernity: a dialogue between communication and social theories, both are published by Fudan University Press. clement Clement York Kee So teaches at the School of Journalism and Communication, the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He graduated with a bachelor degree in sociology and a master degree in communication from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and a Ph.D. degree from the Annenberg School for Communication, University of Pennsylvania, USA. His previous full-time media experience includes: Deputy editor-in-chief of Vancouver’s Ming Pao Daily News, reporter of World Journal, and marketing researcher of HK-TVB. His major teaching and research expertise is in the areas of Hong Kong press, news sociology, citation analysis, and development of the field of communication.

donna Donna Shun Chi Chu interested in research about gender, youth and media literacy. In the past few years, She has conducted research that probed into both the changing gender representation and debates in Hong Kong, and the many emerging issues revolving around new media and youth. These in turn will benefit the implementation of media education projects. In the summer of 2012, she has designed and launched a brand new media education initiative. Called MarsMedia, the project has managed to call for awareness for media literacy in Hong Kong.

sora Sora Kim is an Associate Professor in the School of Journalism and Communication, the Chinese University of Hong Kong. She earned her Ph.D. degree from the University of Tennessee. Her research interests include corporate social responsibility communication, corporate communication and crisis communication management. Her work has been published at Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly, Journal of Public Relations Research, Journal of Advertising, Journal of Business Ethics, Public Relations Review, and other international communication related journals. She has won six top faculty research paper awards from ICA and AEJMC and was awarded a Page Legacy Scholar Grant in 2013.

annisa Annisa Lee Lai Chun Hing’s research interests are in communication and promotion of products, services, places and good causes and these would include advertising, health communication, place branding and social marketing. She has conducted research on a brand Hong Kong project with the C-Centre and a few projects on Health Communication and Social Marketing with the School of Public Health:

1. A randomized controlled trial internet-based interventions for condom use promotion targeting men who have sex with men in Hong Kong
2. Develop drinking advice to strengthen the risk communication on alcohol-related harm
3. “Let’s Eat Well” Project – a social marketing program to address issues of food avoidance problems among cancer patients

saskia Saskia Witteborn is Associate Professor in the School of Journalism and Communication where she also directs the M.A. in Global Communication. She specializes in transnational migration/mobility and communication. Specifically, she is interested in the intersections between embodied and virtual practice and how migrants engage in cultural and political grouping and advocacy. New technologies and forced migration is another important research area. Saskia has worked with and on forced migrants over the past 10 years in North America, Europe, and Hong Kong and is interested in how virtual practice enables the people to connect and mobilize across borders and boundaries.Methodologically, Saskia is a qualitative researcher who is passionate about fieldwork and the ways in which people understand local communicative practice in the context of migration and mobility. As Research Associate with the University of Washington Center for Local Strategy Research, Saskia is very interested in comparative research.

michael Michael Che Ming Chan is an Assistant Professor at the School of Journalism and Communication, the Chinese University of Hong Kong. His research examines the cross-cultural and intergroup aspects of communication at the individual and national level, with particular focus in new media, social media, mobile media, political communication, and international communication. His comparative works include examining the discursive production of national identities by the Chinese and Japanese press and cross-cultural comparisons of American and Hong Kong Facebook users and influence on political attitudes. His works has appeared in journals such as Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication, New Media and Society, Discourse & Communication, and Cyberpsychology, Behavior & Social Networking, among others.

lokman Lokman Tsui is an Assistant Professor at the School of Journalism and Communication, the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Before he joined CUHK, he was Google’s Head of Free Expression in Asia and the Pacific. He received his Ph.D. degree from the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania. His dissertation “A Journalism of Hospitality,” a critical interrogation of how new technologies challenge us to rethink journalism, received the Gene Burd Journalism Research Prize for Best Dissertation in Journalism Studies. Lokman was also a Fellow at Harvard’s Berkman Center for Internet & Society (2008-2009). He was born and raised in the Netherlands and previously managed the unofficial website for filmmaker Wong Kar Wai for many years.

angela Angela Xiao Wu (Ph.D., Northwestern University) is an Assistant Professor at the School of Journalism and Communication. She seeks to understand the connections between cultural change and new media use, which is conditioned by existing cultural patterns. Combining qualitative and quantitative methods, her research draws from political communication, reception study, and cultural sociology. Angela’s past projects look at how Internet use is associated with changes in political cultures and discourses in China, as well as the role of evolving media technologies in cultural globalization.
