Joint IIAS/SSRC Winter School on Media Activism and Postcolonial Futures |

| Details: | In this Winter School, we are interested in exploring digital media activism in postcolonial contexts where historical and contemporary legacies of global power relations shape and inflect media and political practices. Specifically, we will trace how media industries, from news to entertainment, from social networking services to commercialized broadcasting sectors, create new modes of politics building on existing political divides between middle class minorities and majority publics. We will also consider how the politics of ethnicity, religion, caste/race, gender and sexuality shape these new modes of political engagement. In this process we will pay attention to the role of the state and the expanded influence of established commercial media industries in generating new forms of public-private surveillance and control. Finally, we will consider the shifting political valences of digital activism, paying attention to how political energies have been re-oriented towards right-wing populism and new digitally enhanced modes of authoritarianism. | In addition to lectures by leading scholars in the field, students will also conduct group projects and enjoy field trips to important sites of media politics in Hong Kong, such as public broadcasters, commercial press, independent media platforms, NGOs, and new and old sites of activist struggles. At the end of the Winter School, students will make final presentations to the public including the social movement and media organizations they study. | ||

The Inaugural CUHK Research Summit: Digital Methods and Social Development |

| Details: | The Summit builds on the format and pedagogical traditions of the Digital Methods Summer School established since 2007 at the University of Amsterdam (digitalmethods.net), while aspiring to extend it to reflect the social needs in Hong Kong, China, Asia, and the Global South. | |
| The planned activities include (a) a high-level public event on August 21 consisting of keynote speeches and open discussions, and (b) a six-day training program during August 22-27 for advanced PhD students and early career researchers. Speakers and trainers will come from around the world. The content will cover social media analysis, network analysis, data visualization, Big Data, and related research topics. Emphasis will be placed on innovative thinking, the mastery of research tools, the matching between analytical strategies and theoretical / practical questions posed by subject experts, especially in the contexts of Chinese and Asian-language cyberspaces. | ||
